SCC Offers Assistance on Your Path to Success

SCC strives to make a college education accessible to everyone, and Student Disability Services will make sure you're supported in chasing your dreams.

The office of Student Disability Services at SCC helps students manage the challenges and limitations imposed by disabilities. Student Disability Services’ mission is to partner with faculty, staff, and students to create inclusive and accessible learning environments while facilitating academic success through innovative support services and programs.

What is a Disability?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) states that a disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. These conditions can be temporary or chronic.

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended in 2008 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 - Section 504, students must notify the office of Student Disability Services and provide appropriate documentation of a disability to receive academic accommodations. Such academic accommodations are adjustments that are arranged on an individual basis, and do not fundamentally alter course requirements; rather, accommodations provide alternative methods to enable students to fully participate in the learning and evaluation process.
Any enrolled student at Spartanburg Community College who has a documented disability that impacts the educational environment is eligible for services from Student Disability Services. Students must provide the documentation of their disability at their own cost and effort. The office reserves the right to deny services or accommodations until appropriate documentation is provided. The actual services that will be provided are determined based on the nature and severity of the disability, the requirements of each individual academic course or service requested, and consultation with the student, the academic faculty, or service provider.

SCC provides accessible programs, services, and learning environments that shall not exclude any person with a disability who is otherwise qualified to fully participate in college programs. The college continually evaluates programs, services, and facilities to ensure equal access for qualified individuals needing accommodations.
